Presentation PICASSO for COPD: a Dutch national COPD optimisation platform
نویسنده
چکیده
Context: A major problem preventing effective counteracting of the projected rise in the burden of COPD is the insufficient awareness of, and nihilism towards this disabling disease among all stakeholders, i.e. general public, patients, healthcare professionals and healthcare payers. Reasons behind this vary from unawareness of the disease by the general public; poor recognition of symptoms as well as underpresentation by patients who simply attribute their symptoms to a mix of smoking and ageing w1x and poor knowledge of the disease among healthcare givers, who overlook symptoms and fail to diagnose the disease, sometimes only until it has considerably progressed. Furthermore at present there is no appreciation of the burden of disease by healthcare payers and finally there is insufficient awareness of the current magnitude of the problem with politicians and especially about the projected rise in morbidity and mortality of COPD w2x. Purpose: The current nihilism is a great barrier towards structural improvement of COPD management. So it is important to identify the treatable elements of the disease, to further document and make known and understand that those can be treated, and to make interventions measurable and implementable for the relevant stakeholder groups. Description: PICASSO for COPD is a national platform for COPD care optimisation and combines knowledge, experience and resources to support new and existing COPD projects, and stimulates the interaction between these initiatives. After 5 years of working within the field of COPD we have interesting data together with knowledge and structures for improving COPD care. Overlap Syndrome in Respiratory Medicine: Asthma and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease
Asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) are highly prevalent chronic diseases in the general population. Both are characterized by similar mechanisms: airway inflammation, airway obstruction, and airway hyperresponsiveness. However, the distinction between the two obstructive diseases is not always clear. Multiple epidemiological studies demonstrate that in elderly people with o...
متن کاملA Probabilistic Model for COPD Diagnosis and Phenotyping Using Bayesian Networks
Introduction: This research was meant to provide a model for COPD diagnosis and to classify the cases into phenotypes; General COPD, Chronic bronchitis, Emphysema, and the Asthmatic COPD using a Bayesian Network (BN). Methods: The model was constructed through developing the Bayesian Network structure and instantiating the parameters for each of the variables. In order to validate the achiev...
متن کاملImpact of cardiovascular comorbidities on COPD Assessment Test (CAT) and its responsiveness to pulmonary rehabilitation in patients with moderate to very severe COPD: protocol of the Chance study
INTRODUCTION Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a major cause of morbidity and mortality. Patients with COPD are characterised by a reduced health status, which can be easily assessed by the COPD Assessment Test (CAT). Previous studies show that health status can be worsened by the presence of comorbidities. However, the impact of cardiovascular comorbidities on health status as as...
متن کاملThe safety and effectiveness of the current treatment regimen with or without roflumilast in advanced COPD patients: A systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials
Background: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a chronic respiratory disease, which reduces the lung function and causes respiratory symptoms over time, and it is primarily associated with shortness of breath, cough and sputum production. Roflumilast, which is a long-acting selective inhibitor, reduces the anti-inflammatory effect of the main symptoms of COPD. The aim of ...
متن کاملThe Relationship between the Severity of Airway Obstruction and COPD Diagnostic Questionnaire Score in COPD Patients
Background & objectives: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is characterized by irreversible airflow limitation and systemic inflammation which is also associated with pulmonary and extra-pulmonary complications. COPD Diagnostic Questionnaire (CDQ) is a valid questionnaire that is used to identify patients with COPD. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between ...
